Can My Skin Absorb Chemicals in Skin Care?

Can my skin absorb the chemicals in skin care?
There is much debate about what the skin can and can’t absorb in regards to toxic chemicals present in skin care and cosmetics.
The skin is the largest organ of the body (12% of our body weight), and it’s scientifically proven that what we put onto our skin CAN get absorbed into our blood stream.
Science says that absorption into the blood stream does depend on the size of the molecules of the substance, and what ingredients they are combined with – this determines how far into your body the substance can actually go. Nicotine patches are evidence of this, and some medicines are also administered via the skin.
The difficult thing to determine, is which synthetic toxic chemicals in skin care contain molecules small enough to get into our bloodstream, and which synthetic chemicals we are likely to react to, even on a topical level.
It’s impossible for us, the consumer to work this out because:
- We aren’t told the size of the molecules and the penetration level of chemicals present in skin care products i.e will it definitely reach our bloodstream
- The cosmetic industry is pretty much self regulated – they do not have to advise consumers of the safety of their ingredients and penetration levels. There are no laws to govern this
- Companies don’t want to put this information on labels. If proven that the product penetrates into the bloodstream, the product then becomes a ‘medicine’ with a whole new set of laws coming into effect.
- Every person is different with a different sensitivity to chemical substances; one person can have a very bad reaction to a chemical, when another person may not have any at all
- 89% of the 10,500 ingredients used in personal care products today, have not been evaluated for safety
The cosmetic industry will tout that chemical substances are in such minute quantities that they will not affect our health. But the question is, what are the effects of toxic chemicals going into our bodies for 5, 10, 20, 30 years or more? The cosmetic industry can’t answer this, as they don’t know. No long term testing has been done.
This is why I will always choose organic products over chemical based products that I don’t know the safety of…
I certainly choose to take control of my own health rather than put it in the hands of others who don’t even give all the facts and who’s number one priority is to sell products… There is much deceit, with you and I being the guinea pigs, within a vast industry that lacks regulation and laws to protect the health of us, the consumer.
Last year, a former L’Oreal executive blew the whistle on the companys use of banned chemicals… There are many, many more stories of this nature.
So why wouldn’t we choose to use organic products , with the gentle nurturing of mother nature, over toxic substances that pollute our planets soil… water… AND our bodies…
Organic products are certainly the natural choice, for todays intelligent consumer.
