Can Meditation Turn Back The Clock?
Yes it can. In my tips for natural anti-aging I mention that meditation and de-stressing is one of the most important aspects of maintaining optimal health which in turn, helps to keep us ‘young.’
The body/mind connection is widely researched today and what we do know for certain is that our state of mind affects our health, and it’s immense power helps us heal dis-ease in our bodies. We underestimate our own power and ability to positively influence the aging process.
STRESS = AGING and research has revealed that regular meditation can actually take years off your physiological age – it’s never too late to start!

What is the best meditation for anti-aging?
Meditation is a journey that will unfold in a unique way for each of us and most of us will try various techniques along the way. Along with practicing meditation however, you also need to look at what you think and how you feel about aging (see point no.3 below). Remember:
Every thought and state of mind you indulge in has a physiological response – something happens in the body and supports either health or dis-ease.
Is your predominant state of mind vibrant, positive and ageless? If so, your body will no doubt reflect that. Are you mostly fearful with worry and angst about life, aging and growing old? Your predominant state of mind is a key determinant in your state of health and also how you age.

There are many different styles of meditation and I encourage you to research and experiment to find which one is going to suit you and what fits in with your lifestyle.

My Anti-Aging Meditation…
1. In Meditation For Beginners I mention a breath meditation which I do every day. You basically
focus on the feeling of the breath coming in through the nostrils and then going out… you focus on the cool air coming in and the warm air going out…
This simple technique can be done anywhere at anytime and concentrates and purifies the mind. This is great to do if your mind is whirling with stressful thoughts as the mind cannot focus on the breath and also ‘think’ at the same time. 2. I also regularly use Holosync technology (which I also mention in Meditation For Beginners). 3. Change your perception of aging. If we hold the power to heal our complex bodies, then we definitely have the power to keep it in optimal health and affect the aging process. Science reveals that our bodies aren’t programmed to age and in fact, we have in-built mechanisms that actually fight aging and allow for the reversal of it. Geneticist Aubrey de Grey, the Chief Scientific Officer of SENS Foundation which researches and promotes regenerative medicine, confirms that aging is not in fact programmed like we think it is. Current research into regenerative medicine means that in the future we may be able to reverse the aging process through science. Right now however, we can influence the way we age by using our mind and intention – the most powerful tool we have.
Deepak Chopra stated in an interview with Veronica Hay, “Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti-oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation.” He says that our intention not to age is a powerful mechanism that we can utilize but just don’t believe that we can. (I believe it!)

4. Take out the trash. Look at your self talk and don’t focus on wrinkles!! With an intention to stay young and healthy
putting your face 1cm away from the mirror and saying things like ” God, look at my wrinkles!” isn’t congruent. For a start, no one except your loved one would even come that close to your face! Remember what you focus on you create. Well if what you see is wrinkles that’s what you’re going to get. Instead, change the picture in your mind and also the self talk – give thanks in your mind for your youthful, smooth skin when you’re applying face creams – see your skin as smooth and youthful and also remind yourself that you are more than your physical body.
Start taking the trash out of your mind. It may take some discipline on your part to change the self talk and what you focus on when you look in the mirror (most of the time we aren’t even aware of our own self talk) so be mindful of what your habitual mind is chattering about and change it where you need to – it will be worth the effort. You’ll be shining from the inside which will most definitely be reflected in your appearance and ultimately have a positive effect on all those around you.

I am about to go on a Vipassana Meditation Retreat very shortly – it’s 2 meals per day, 10 days of silence and 10 hours of meditation each day! It will be super challenging, but I’m looking forward to strengthening my mind. Vipassana meditation is about ’seeing the true nature of things’ and being mindful of your internal world.
