Oily Skin Care Tips
- Avoid products containing mineral oils as they clog the pores
- Avoid products containing alcohol as they strip your skin of natural beneficial oils
- Avoid pore clogging makeup filled with chemicals; switch to organic mineral makeup
- Avoid eating too many processed fatty foods and cut down your sugar intake
- Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine – too much can dehydrate your skin
- Avoid wearing makeup to bed – make sure you cleanse each night! Very important as the body renews itself during sleep
DO’s…
- Drink more pure water – filtered/bottled. Your skin is actually mainly hydrated from the inside by water! Moisturizer doesn’t hydrate as such, it provides a topical barrier to keep the hydration in
- Drink more herbal teas – peppermint is a great cleanser and you can also buy specific herbal teas to purify your skin (from any supermarket or health food store)
- Eat more fresh fruit and raw vegies – fresh juices are awesome and great cleansers for our system and blood
- Use a gentle purifying cleanser that won’t strip your skin
- Apply pure, organic aloe vera gel after cleansing or an organic hydrating skin conditioner to add hydration, and also help balance and heal the skin; apply before moisturizing
- Make sure you have adequate zinc intake as zinc helps with healing (good for acne & pimples) You can actually buy a Zinc Test (to see if you have enough) from any chemist
- Exfoliate – very important – at least once a week ( I scrub every 3 days or so) to rid the skin of dead skin cells and to help de-clog your pores. Don’t scrub if you have aggravated acne (see my tips below for a great alternative)
- Steam maybe once every couple of weeks to start and then see how you go with once a week. Put your head over a bowl of fairly hot water, with towel over your head to trap the steam. A drop of organic lavender oil would be great to add, as it’s very balancing and healing. Then exfoliate directly after the steam. Your skin will feel fantastic! (don’t steam if you have aggravated acne)
MORE TIPS! & RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OILY SKIN CARE
- I highly recommend the Miessence Purifying Essentials Pack – amazing results for oily skin and acne! (many people have had great results…)
- Give yourself a honey mask once a week – buy some organic honey (must be organic as it hasn’t been chemically treated and still has all the nutrients). Spread about a teaspoon over your face and leave on for about 10 – 15 mins before washing off with warm water. Honey gives a wonderful gentle ‘pick me up’ for your skin!
- You can even add organic honey to clay masks, which have a purifying, drawing action on the skin
- To help balance the acid mantle of your skin, mix some organic apple cider vinegar, approx. 1 tblspoon (MUST be organic) with approx. 100ml of pure springwater or lavender water and apply with a cotton ball directly after cleansing. Apple cider vinegar will help to balance the PH level of your skin – which will help balance the oil production of your skin. It works beautifully! Lavender water is also wonderful, as it’s a natural balancer and antiseptic.
- Alternatively, use the Miessence Probiotic Skin Brightener after cleansing, which is a very mild organic lactic acid which balances the PH level of the skin, and naturally exfoliates and breaks down impurities. It also helps to reduce pigmentation in the skin – it’s awesome – I noticed a difference with my facial pigmentation within a week. I actually recommend this for all skin types but it’s extremely beneficial for acne/blemish prone skin.
- Acne Vulgaris (aggravated acne) – I highly recommend the Miessence Probiotic Skin Brightener and a weekly organic honey mask. Avoid the clay masks if your acne is really aggravated, as you don’t want too much of a drawing action. Blemish Gel will work wonders for you too!
- Miesssence Blemish Gel is a product I just can’t live without!! This is truly an amazing gel that will reduce pimples overnight. It reduces redness and inflammation (great if you’ve been naughty and picked!) and is excellent for insect bites too. This is a must in my books for anyone prone to blemishes or acne
- Lavender essential oil is also another must in my books – lavender is the ‘all round’ healer. It balances, heals, soothes, reduces redness and is the best thing for burns. It’s the only essential oil you can safely put directly onto your skin. It’s great for pimples! And if you burn yourself – put lavender oil on it straight away and you won’t blister. It’s truly an amazing oil.
- I also use Rejuvenessence Facial Serum as a potent boost for my skin at night time, and I sometimes even use it on it’s own as a day moisturiser (apply all oils to damp skin as this will make it penetrate more and won’t leave an oily film on your face). I also use the Rejuvenessence Facial serum on my clients in facial treatments, and even those with oily, acne prone skin have loved it and it hasn’t made them break out. It smells truly divine! and is very light in texture.
The most important thing to remember with an oily skin care regime is DON’T STRIP YOUR FACE OF ALL IT’S OIL.
