Why Choose Certified Organic Skin Products?
Why choose Certified Organic Skin Products?
We see the words ‘natural’ and organic on thousands of skin products today! So it’s important to know what constitutes truly natural, organic skin products.
Firstly, beware of natural or organic skin products without actual certification to support it. Organic skin products without certification may still contain chemicals.
Skin products cleverly branded as organic and natural, lead us to believe all skin products with the word organic on the label are safe, when they may not be.
As trusting consumers, when we see an ‘organic’ ingredient marketed on skin product labels, we tend to immediately feel the product is a totally organic skin product, and is safe and good for us, when in fact it may still contain a myriad of toxic chemicals. Manufacturers add these basically because they are cheap!
- One-third of all skin care products contain one or more chemical ingredients that are classified as possible carcinogens (cancer causing substances)
- 89% of the 10,500 ingredients used in personal care products today, have not been evaluated for safety
- 55% of all skin care products assessed contain chemical “penetration enhancers” which are ingredients that can increase a product’s penetration. This increases your exposure to all the nasty chemicals that may be present and absorbed through your skin
- Lack of regulation in laws around labelling allow companies to put the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ on skin care products, no matter how many chemical processes the original natural ingredient has gone through
It is common for manufacturers, even of skin products containing some organic ingredients, to disguise chemicals and list the natural source of a chemical (eg.derived from coconut) to lull consumers into a false sense of security – we then have that feeling that all of the ingredients in the product are totally ‘natural’, ‘pure’ and ‘safe’.
This common practice is called ‘GREEN WASHING‘
So the best thing you can do is READ YOUR LABELS! even on skin products labeled organic. Educate yourself on what’s in the products you are currently putting onto your skin. Yes, the product may have some lovely essential oils in it, but these may be living in a nasty concoction of chemicals as a base.
So when you pick up those so called natural and organic skin products, look carefully at the label. A good little book to have in your handbag is The Chemical Maze; I carry it with me everywhere! and it’s an interesting exercise to look up the ingredients in the things you usually buy. You’ll be amazed at what you’ve been eating and using!
Organic skin products that are certified have been created with total integrity – the whole system in the creation of the products is linked together; starting in the way the ingredients are grown, then prepared, processed and ultimately packaged…
Certified Organic Skin Care Products mean:
- Ingredients in organic skin products have been grown and processed without the use of chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides
- Ingredients in organic skin products have not been genetically modified in any way; studies show that organic ingredients contain more nutrients, vitamins and cancer-fighting anti-oxidants than non-organic ingredients
- Real organic skin products are manufactured with NO SYNTHETIC emulsifiers, emollients, humectants, surfactants, preservatives, artificial colours, aromas… These are aspects of a lotion that hold it together, make it foam, make it last etc
- 95% of the ingredients in the skin products are organic – that’s not including water. This means that 95% of the ingredients are active and therefore beneficial for your skin and health! Most products on the market are mainly water with a minute amount of active ingredients, if any (that’s a huge issue in itself which I will add to this site very soon!)
